Precision Loads Onboard Weighing Solutions
Onboard scale systems optimize load capacity and efficiency in a variety of industries. If you can't bring the product to the scale, we'll bring the scale to the product. In addition to standard onboard solutions, Rice Lake Weighing Systems can customize onboard weighing systems for almost any conceivable need. Find onboard models for straight trucks, tractor trailers, fixed/rigid trucks, roll-offs and dump truck applications.
FIXED / RIGID TRUCK
For trucks with standard spring suspension, an onboard scale system is created through straightforward load cell technology and an in-cab digital weight display. Rice Lake's onboard scale systems provide accurate, reliable and efficient payload measurement to assure optimal and safe use of a truck's payload capacity.
- Maximize payload potential without the risk of overload
- Optimize equipment performance
- Improve efficiency, safety and awareness
- Quick installation in as little as 8-20 hours per truck
- Typical return on your investment is less than one year
TRACTOR / TRAILER
Onboard tractor/trailer designs are available for air ride, spring suspension and combination systems. Know exactly how much weight is loaded at any given moment. Rice Lake's onboard scale systems provide accurate, reliable and efficient payload measurement to assure optimal and safe use of a truck's payload capacity.

Return on Investment
Accurate and reliable payload measurement is an important element of profitability and operating safety bulk hauling. Whether for municipal, county, state or private operations, a Rice Lake onboard weighing system allows optimum, safe and legal use of a truck's payload capacity--both for maximizing loads and preventing the liabilities of overloading.
Payback Analysis Worksheet
In determining the amount of time (days) required to recover your cost to fit your truck with Rice Lake onboard scales, it is necessary to establish the degree and frequency of both overloading and underloading.
Step 1: | Review at least 10 recent consecutive weight receipts of loads from a certified scale. Include only legal loads. Do not include overloads. Add up these loads (Gross Weighments), then calculate your Average Load. | EXAMPLE: 12 consecutive Gross Weighments Divided by 12 Average Gross Load = |
906,960 lbs. 75,580 lbs. 75,580 lbs. |
Step 2: | Calculate the Average Underload per trip by subtracting your average load in Step 1 from the legally permissible Gross Weight. | EXAMPLE: Legally permissible Gross Weight Less Average Load, Step 1 Average Underload per trip = |
80,000 lbs. 75,580 lbs. 4,420 lbs. |
Step 3: | Convert the Average Underload per trip into a percentage of Legally permissible Gross Weight. Divide Avg. Underload (Step 2) by Legal Gross Weight. | EXAMPLE: 4,420 lb divided by 80,000 lb Multiply x 100 |
5.525% |
Step 4: | Apply the above percentage to total revenue earned per trip multiplied by number of trips. | EXAMPLE: 3 trips per day x $180 revenue per trip Multiply by Underload Percentage Revenue loss from underloading = |
$540. 5.525% $29.84/day |
Step 5: | Calculate number of days to recuperate on-board scale cost from eliminating underloading. | EXAMPLE: Cost of scale installed Divided by daily revenue loss Total days for return on investment = |
$6,000 $29.84 201 days |
NOTE: The cost of overloading has not been included in this calculation. To include these costs, add the total of dollars expended over the past 8 months in overweight fines and subtract from the Cost of Scale, then divide this amount by the daily revenue loss from underloading.
EXAMPLE: Cost of scale (installed) Less overweight expense over 8 months Revised Cost of Scale Divided by daily revenue loss from Step 4 Time of Total Scale Cost Recovery |
$6,000 $600 $5,400 $29.84 181 days |
